Background
The Hawkers Market Girls Center (HMGC) was created to enable girls
and young women to reach their highest potential along with becoming
better citizens of the world.
In 1993, three determined women set fourth to create better opportunities
for underprivileged women from poverty stricken areas such as the
Mathare slums.
With over 150, 000 inhabitants, the Mathare slums are among the five
largest slums in Nairobi and over time have been considered among
the most dangerous. Inadequate sanitation and a deficient water supply
are the biggest threats to people within the Mathare community leading
to a high risk of disease and sickness.
Due to the circumstances, young women and children are forced to find
employment in order to provide food for the family.
This in turn becomes a contributing factor to the lack of overall
education and continuing cycle of poverty. |
